Info on Grants and Incentives

As we all know, Federal grants are typically financial assistance programs used by various Federal agencies to support or stimulate growth in a particular market sector and are authorized by law for certain periods of time.  In addition, grants originating at the Federal level can either be executed through state agencies or through the Federal agencies themselves.  Most common of these granting agencies are the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy (DOE).  Although both agencies have grants available at the time of this update, it is on the state and local level that the large majority of grants can be found.

Incentives are another way for the owner of a photovoltaic system to offset the first cost of purchasing and installing a photovoltaic system.  An incentive is  any factor (financial or non-financial) that enables or motivates a particular course of action, or counts as a reason for preferring photovoltaics to other renewable alternatives.  For example, some progressive utilities will create ratepayer funded programs to encourage its customers to help offset demand by using PV at/on their construct.  Furthermore, some state energy and environmental agencies may want to develop a particular market segment within the renewable market sector that is deficient.  In most cases, incentives are cash rebates that come after the installation of the system, soft costs for design and engineering are typically not incentivized and should be noted as an additional design cost.  Lastly, incentives are available through the Internal Revenue and should be researched by your financial experts or accountant.
